Naypyidaw: Burma’s secret new capital

Photographer: Anuj Chopra
Description: Kamudra Hotel in Nayyidawaw’s hotel zone. These pictures were surreptitiously clicked, riding pillion on a motor-bike, touring Naypyidaw, Burma’s secret new capital, posing as a tourist. The Burmese junta is spending billions building it in the middle of a malaria-infested jungle, 250 miles north of Rangoon. In this country with a bankrupt economy, its considered an “epic waste”.

The military junta of the restive country is preparing a new capital, Nay Pyi Taw, in an effort to shore up even more power against its critics.
